Why Policy Will Shape Africa’s Trade Future

Africa has the markets.

It has the people, natural resources, entrepreneurs and increasingly sophisticated businesses needed to drive a new era of economic growth.

But potential alone does not create trade.

Policy does.

Every business that seeks to expand across borders encounters the rules that governments and institutions create. Tariffs. Customs procedures. Product standards. Tax rules. Payment systems.

Investment regulations. Immigration policies. Digital regulations.

Together, these rules can either connect markets or keep them apart.

For too long, African businesses have operated across a continent of fragmented systems. A company seeking to expand into a neighbouring market may encounter different regulations, complex border procedures, incompatible standards and costly payment arrangements.

The result is that doing business across Africa can sometimes be more difficult than trading with markets thousands of kilometres away.

This is why the policy architecture of African trade matters.

The African Continental Free Trade Area represents an important effort to change this reality by creating a framework for a more integrated continental market.

But the real test lies beyond the agreement.

It lies in implementation.

Can goods move more easily across borders?

Can businesses receive payments efficiently?

Can regulations become more predictable?

Can African producers access larger markets?

Can governments create an environment in which companies have the confidence to invest, expand and compete?

These are not abstract policy questions.

They shape real business decisions every day.

And they will help determine whether Africa’s enormous economic potential becomes a reality.

That is why policy will be central to the conversation at the Africa Business Convention 2027.

Through its Policy Forums, the Convention will examine the policies, reforms and regulatory choices shaping African businesses and prosperity.

Because trade does not happen by accident.

It is built on choices.

And the choices Africa makes today will help shape the markets, industries and opportunities of tomorrow.

Africa Trade is not only about crossing borders. It is also about changing the rules that stand in the way.
