This week, we are spotlighting the Africa Business Convention pillars and communities. We start with Agriculture & Food Security (AFS), the sector feeding over 1.5 billion Africans and employing more than half the continent’s workforce.
Agriculture and Food Security (AFS) sits at the centre of one of Africa’s starkest contradictions. The continent holds roughly 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, an agricultural endowment few regions can match, yet many African economies remain heavily dependent on food imports. The gap isn’t land or ambition. It’s fragmented regional markets, underinvestment in agribusiness value chains, and limited access to modern farming finance and technology.
This is exactly the work the Agriculture and Food Security (AFS) pillar exists to do: working the value chain end to end, from farm productivity to regional market access, as one part of the wider trade story Africa Business Convention 2027 exists to advance. It connects agribusiness operators, processors, investors, and policymakers who are building the infrastructure, financing models, and market linkages that turn raw agricultural potential into reliable food systems and export value.
It also connects directly to the convention’s broader trade agenda. As intra-African trade deepens under AfCFTA, agriculture becomes more productive when farmers can reach larger regional markets rather than being boxed into local ones, which is part of why AFS sits so close to the Jobs, Economy & Trade conversation happening at the convention.
On the floor in March, Agriculture and Food Security (AFS) sessions bring together the operators scaling agribusiness, the investors financing value-chain infrastructure, and the policymakers shaping the regulatory environment around food security.
